Before the subordination of reason to revelation took place in the history of the conflict between faith and reason, there was a harmonization between these two concepts. During this harmonization, both faith and reason had shared in the divine mind. However, an interesting claim had been made by a Bishop of Constantinople named Eunomius. He brought instability to the harmony by bringing to light the fact that, if humans were able to experience the divine mind through reason, there was no need for revelation. Going to church to experience God was an inconvenience compared to staying at one's own home and sharing in the experience through reason. This spelled disaster for the churches because there was no way it could possibly be said at the time that the experience of God through reason was inadequate. There needed to be some way of explaining why humans needed divine revelation. This threat to the Christian church is what started the movement of the subordination of reason to revelation.
This was the start of the conflict between faith and reason. Those that supported revelation and the church could not deny reason but it had to be put down...
