The Cancellation of
Hawaiian Winter Baseball League
Introduction
Purpose
For five years, the Hawaiian Winter Baseball League was regarded as one of the best off-season leagues. During the league's tenure, over sixty players came through the islands on their way to the major league. After making great strides to survive, the league was abruptly canceled three winters ago. Before its cancellation, Ruben Chappins, league's director of operations (personal communication, October 12, 2000) issued this statement, "We're getting bigger and better, there's no doubt about it. I think our track record speaks for itself." Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
The purpose of the report is to help the directors of the league plan and develop a longer lasting league. The report will give the directors an overall picture of what went wrong and help them plan and decide on improvements needed to run a successful league, like the Arizona and the Mexican league. The improvements and ideas will result in the return of the Hawaii Winter League...
