Both Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin are considered the first true comedians in film. . Keaton and Chaplin could make a situation both funny and serious at the same time. They are legends in the film industry for their unique talents of making comedies in their own original ways.
Best known for his recurring character, the Tramp, Chaplin's comedies were a combination of pathos and slapstick, something previously unseen in early silent film. He had various political views of the world and his movies reflected his dislike of the abundance of poverty and homelessness. The Tramp was a lovable character, just trying to make it in life, getting from meal to meal and occasionally trying to get the girl. He was a character the common man could relate to and sympathize with. Chaplin wanted you to sympathize for him and you could tell by his facial expressions or attitudes.
