The role of women in Antigone significantly changed from the duty to the state to loyalty to family. Many views on what the role on a woman is, is put into the play from the perspective of the main characters. The characters views basically stay the same throughout the play and show how they feel about the issue. An example of a character changing its mind on how he feels on the issue is Haemon. At first he agrees with his father Creon but as they continue their conversation Haemon listens to the people of Thebes and thinks that Antigone should not be killed even though she is a woman and broke the law. Creon does not listen to Haemon or the people of Thebes and Antigone is buried alive in a tomb. If Antigone was a man she might not have been killed because of how Creon viewed the issue.(Anovilh,177)
Creon and Haemon share the same views on what a woman should do in society. Creon is willing to kill Antigone for burying her brother even though she is a woman and she was not spouse to do that even if she was a man. Since Antigone was a woman, it made it even worse because she disobeyed the law...
