Drug Testing in Public Schools
High school is a period in a young person's life where events that occur shape the person they are in his or her adult life. Some of these events include participating in extra curricular activities, which has now become more difficult for some students. In a 5-4 decision, the Justices of the Supreme Court approved random drug tests in public school of any student who wishes to participate in any extracurricular activities (FoxNews 2). The policy requires students to have a consent form signed, and dated by their parent and themselves. Then, the student must submit and pass an initial drug screening in order to participate in the activity (Pope 1). The drugs that students are screened for include: Amphetamines, Marijuana, Methadone, Cocaine, Opiates, etc. After this is done various schools test only with reasonable suspicion. Most schools, however, who participate in this conduct random drug testing. There are many arguments to support both sides of the issue.
