Literature, in its broadest sense, is everything that has ever been written. But, if we think of literature as something else like a fine art, how can one tell literature from writing on the bathroom wall?
To best answer this question my notes from class should be suffice. In class the discussion was "What makes something literature?" The class responded with a few answers. One of them was "a work that is applicable to todays time and to the future of time." Another response from class was "A work that makes you think and makes us ask questions- furthermore something that challenges us." These responses from class were on-target. Donald Hall in "Telling good fiction from bad" had a similar reaction; "Literature on the other hand, entertaining us while it enlarges our awareness of unpredictable human experience." So in other words an idea that's not so easy to predict and has you feel that you've been challenged...
