When most people think of dance, it is assumed that dance originally was invented in upper class societies in Europe, however the African American contribution to dance dates back to as late as 1619.
African American dance originated when African people were brought to America as indentured servants. ... In order to feel liberated and tell their story they felt it was important make it known, they best expressed themselves through dance. When slavery started to get very large in America about forty million slaves were held and their impact on the new worlds dance became extremely important in American culture.
