It is widely believed that the pyramids were built for religious reasons. Because of this, it is important to have a basic understanding of their religion to truly understand the beauty of the pyramids. While there is some dispute about the religion of the ancient Egyptians, most people agree that they had many gods and goddesses and that they had strong beliefs in the afterlife. This is where the pyramids tie in to the religious aspect of the ancient Egyptian life.
Religion in ancient Egypt can be compared to modern religion in one key way, not everyone believed the same thing. Kings would worship their own gods, as would the priests and the common people. In fact, depending on who was ruling Egypt, they believed a different creation myth. For one brief period were they even monotheistic because of the pharaoh Ikhaton. It was not until Menes ruled, uniting Upper and Lower Egypt, that there was even a hierarchy of gods. Before that, dominance of a god completely relied on the beliefs of the ruling king and their area of dominance varied with the position of the capital...
