Depression is a strange disease because they is not just one cause of it. In fact, there are many causes for depression and many of them have nothing to do with anything health related. These reasons could be events such as a life-changing experience, the loss of a loved one, fights with family and friends, and abuse. Those medical reasons that can cause depression are things such as a diagnosis of a serious illness, medications, and a family history or depression. Now while these are the reasons that the onset of depression occurs, there is also a biological reason for depression.
People suffering from depression have changes in their brains compared to people who do not suffer from depression. Scientists have proven that the hippocampus, a small part of the brain helps the storage of memories, is 9-13% smaller in women with a history of depression than in those who've never been depressed. A smaller hippocampus has fewer serotonin receptors. Serotonin is a chemical messenger that allows communication between nerves in the brain and the body.
