A major theme represented throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald's timeless novel The Great Gatsby is character versus inner self. The theme parallel with the various personal feelings characters confront. Character versus inner self is noted in Daisy Buchanan, Jay Gatsby, and George Wilson.
Daisy experiences character versus inner self through her love for both Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby. Daisy, in her younger years, won Gatsby's heart. However, Gatsby was in the military and was recruited to fight in World War I. Although, Daisy promised Gatsby that she would wait for him, she fell in love with the money of a wealthy brute named Tom Buchanan. Daisy decided to marry Tom. On her wedding night, however, Daisy received a letter from Gatsby, and she began to change her mind about the marriage...
