... Cancer is one of the most common diseases in the world. Although it is one of the most deadly diseases, scientists are making progress in the knowledge of cancer, heading towards preventing and possibly curing the disease. “Cancer is a growth disorder of cells. ... Most cancer cells cannot be inherited, because cancer cells are somatic cells, and have nothing to do with the gametes. Cancer starts in the cell cycle, during mitosis. ... Cancer is essentially, the disability of the body to control cell proliferation. ... Scientists have found one cause of cancer in the gene they have called p53. ... Cancer causing mutations are recessive, because it takes both copies of the gene to be mutant to lead to cancer. There are many different types of cancers, because cancer cells can grow in any tissue in the body. ... The three most common are lung and breast cancer, and cancer of the colon and rectum.
The most common cancer causing the most deaths is lung cancer. The most common cause of lung cancer is cigarette smoking. Although there are other factors that may be the cause of the cancer, smokers are at a higher risk of developing cancer. “An estimated 157,200 in 2003, accounted for 28 % of all cancer deaths” (Cancer, 13). There are over 20 different types of cancer, so 28 % is a large portion of deaths. More and more women are dying of lung cancer than breast cancer, which used to be the most common cancer that caused death among women. “Declines in adult tobacco use have slowed, as have declines in lung cancer mortality in those under 45 years old. Tobacco use among youth increased considerably in the 1990s, although it declined after 1997” (Cancer, 13). ... The earlier you build up on the carcinogen that harms the genes, the greater the risk of developing cancer later.
