One would be hard pressed to find a person in first world countries today who did not know about the Microsoft Corporation. "Opening Windows" is something more people do on their computer now rather than by manipulating a glass-covered opening in their house. It is the most popular Intel processor based computer operating system in the world. Microsoft has obtained a monopolistic hold on many parts of the computer software industry. Unfortunately they have not achieved this by creating exceptional, top-notch products but instead by leveraging their highly successful and dominate operating system to push out competitors' software of the market. This is a direct and blatant violation of the Sherman Antitrust act and Microsoft needs to be stopped. The only way to truly stop them is to divide Microsoft into two separate companies. They are simply too dominant a company with too much market share to reasonably expect any competitor to stand a chance.
In 1999 Microsoft was charged with multiple violations of the Sherman Act, alleging that the company had committed monopolistic actions that directly and financially impaired their competition from taking any of Microsoft's Operating System market share.
