The song being interpreted is one by the very popular band, Red Hot Chili Peppers. The song is entitled, "Under the Bridge" and was written by the bands lead singer, Anthony Keidis. At first glance, the song seems to be about a girl and about the city he lives in. However, after further review the song takes on an entirely different meaning. The song is actually about Keidis' addiction to heroin. Throughout the song he tells of how the drug has helped fill the void he feels constantly. His loneliness seems to be his biggest problem. However, as it is found later in the song, clearly heroin was not the answer to his problem.
Anthony Keidis, along with other members of his band, struggled with heroin addiction. During one of his most troubled times, after recently kicking the habit, Keidis' wrote in his diary a poem that expressed his feelings towards the addiction and the consequences of his actions...
