John Proctor is not guilty, which makes him the true protagonist in The Crucible.
John Proctor’s affair with Abigail Adams is clearly over when he tells her, “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. ... Though Proctor may be the cause of Abigail’s anger, he is not in control of her actions; thus Proctor is not responsible. John Proctor is responsible for himself and proves the responsibility for his actions by confessing to his wife, Elizabeth.
