The end of WW II brought with it a new world order, one which became bipolar, with the Soviet Union and the U.S. each dividing the world in to their spheres of influence. The Cold War defined the world and the issues for over fifty years. With military and political stalemate in Europe the Superpowers settled in a conflict based on stand offs and occasional confrontations. The Cold War was mostly waged on the principle of balance of power. The US or the USSR would look for other states that would join the sphere of influences of either of the two powers. Thus, trying to tip the balance of power in their favour. This world order would prevail for over fifty years.
After the revolution of 1989, sometimes referred to as the counter-revolution, Europe has taken on a new face, one that is lacking the old totalitarian governments of Central and Eastern Europe...
