Old Man at the Bridge
By Ernest Hemingway
Very often during a war people are forced to leave their hometowns, they loose their families and
friends. In “ Old Man at the Bridge” by Ernest Hemingway the character of the old man faces the
war in Spain. ... With other citizens he has to cross the bridge, however hopelessness and grieving for
the animals prevent the old man from going on. The writer uses symbols, setting, irony and
conflict in order to show the tension and disability of the old man to start a new life.
The atmosphere of the war and the personal disaster of the old man are reflected in the
symbols of the bridge, the old man himself and the animals.
