Violence has often been connected with sporting events. But crowd violence or hooliganism in and around the football-stadiums has escalated in recent years. Off and on the fields there have been mass arrests of fanatical football supporters at matches. English football clubs not the Scottish, welsh or Irish clubs were excluded from European competitions and tournaments for some years.
