CHAPTER 1: PLOT AND SUB-PLOT.
Scene 1: Alice, a poor unmarried mother and village girl of the seventeenth century, has a brief sexual encounter with a man who boasts he is the devil. He seems to have a fascination with witchcraft. She asks to go off with him but he refuses, calling her a whore. She pleads merely to see him again but he turns her down, pushing her out of the way.
Scene 2: Two farmer neighbours of Alice, Jack and Margery, are discussing renting additional land. They think they see Alice who Margery has no time for, but Jack feels sorry for wandering in the distance. It turns out to be Betty, their landowner's young daughter, who is supposed to be locked up in her room for refusing to marry. Several cows have mysteriously died. Betty mentions a desire she had to jump from a tree and fly...
