In this essay I am going to explore and discuss the ways in which the character of Caliban relates to the major themes of the play, The Tempest. The themes that I am going to relate the character Caliban to are: appearance, language, and revenge.
Caliban is a very complex character. He is dark and earthy, often described as a monster by the other characters in the play. As the son of a witch, Caliban appears as a half beast, half human creature and is a native to the enchanted island. Caliban is whom Prospero stole control of the island from. Caliban lacked in education and civility before Prospero and his daughter Miranda taught him how to speak and think.
Appearance is a key theme throughout the play because of Caliban. He is described as a "freckled whelp hag- born- not honoured with a human shape" (Act 1 sc 2 line 282). In other words he is a deformed creature with a grotesque appearance...
