In "David", Earle Birney depicts the story of the main characters David and Bobbie by using literary devices and techniques to convey the overall meaning and theme of the narrative poem.
David is an adventurous man who has a passion for rock climbing and he begins to share his passion with Bobbie. They begin to climb various mountains and David continues to teach him what he knows and loves. As the boys hike, they come across the bones of a mountain goat. David is a proficient mountain climber, and to the narrator, he seems as sure-footed as a mountain goat. Later, David and Bobby come across an injured Robin. David quickly kills it, explaining that it could not learn how to fly.
While climbing a bizarre shaped mountain named "The Finger," the narrator slips and David quickly balances him. The extra force affects David's foothold and he falls off the side of the mountain. The narrator rushes down the cliff to find David still alive, but he is paralyzed from the neck down...
