Writing can be considered a literary work when it conveys a pertinent message that either informs or invokes a feeling from within. This can be done in varying forms, either structured or unstructured, as long as the writing is available to a reader. Literary tools are often used, such as metaphors, allegories, etc. to invoke thought from the reader or to emphasize a feeling. Though not necessary, literature is often written as a response to an event, whether public or personal, that affects either a group of people or the author him or herself. A poem scribbled on a napkin has the same literary value as a short story or novel, granted that it can evoke an emotion from the reader. Literature cannot truly be defined, nor can every writing be classified for its literary merit. For example, the song "American Pie" by Don McLean may not be a typical literary form, but it does possess strong literary characteristics and convey an intelligent message. McLean wrote the song as a response to the change in rock and roll music after the death of three major musicians. Written ten years after the plane crash that claimed their lives, "American Pie" indirectly addresses this issue, using a metaphor almost every line to prove his point...
