A utilitarian view of education
Some people have a somewhat narrow view of education being a good thing only because of its usefulness (utility) in eventually getting a job. On this view the study of religion is only useful if one is going be a vicar or a nun! Most educators don't see it like this, but view their subjects as worth studying for their own sake. The pages on this site may help to broaden a utilitarian view of religious education.
Utilitarianism is also a philosophical method of making moral decisions - its most famous proponent being the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832).

If you were offered a guaranteed 1,000% annual return on an investment, you would certainly be wary. But, once you understood that it was real and well-founded, you'd take it, wouldn't you?
But look at that 'investment' from the other side. Suppose you were told that your tax money was going to be used to provide government-funded perks for convicted felons?..
