Edgar Lee Masters was one of the great American novelist/poets of the early 1900's. This era was known as the Chicago Literary Renaissance. He has written many pieces of literature but the one piece that sticks out above all the rest is called "Spoon River Anthology". It is a book full of 250 poems spoken by the dead people of a town called Spoon River, Illinois. This book is still regarded as one of the most creative ways to put a collection of poems together and a great American classic.
Masters was born in Garnett, Kansas during 1869. Eleven years later in 1880 him and his family moved to Lewistown, Illinois to live on their grandfathers farm. Lewistown and Petersburg, two neighboring town, became the scenes for his poems in "Spoon River Anthology". His father was a lawyer and did not except that his son was going to be a writer.
