If you wanted to succeed you had to go away. You could do nothing in Dublin.? This statement reveals the reverie of escape that most Dubliners entertain. Rather than embrace their fortunes, the denizens of ?dear dirty Dublin? opt to exist with the profound weight of the desire to flee their unfulfilling lives, with no regard to how right or wrong the path to that prosperity may be. In stark contrast with the affluent Gallaher, Thomas Chandler is ?a little man.? In stature, he is only slightly shorter than the average man, but it is his overall appearance that diminishes his would-be masculine features to those of a youngster with ?childish white teeth.? If he were a larger man, as is Gallaher, he may have confidence enough to chase his dreams, but alas, he is of the ?lower? class of men who seem to lack the fortitude to rise above their circumstances.
