Introduction
Management is defined as the process of coordinating and integrating work activities so that they are completed efficiently and effectively with and through other people (Robbins, 2000, pp. 8). Management theories are vital in providing a conceptual framework which enables people to learn about what managers are and what they are doing. Throughout the century, theorists from different backgrounds have come with many ways to view and explain managerial works. One of the most common management theories is classical management theory that consists of management functions and roles.
The functional view described by Henri Fayol consists of planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, and controlling (Fayol, 1949, pp. 5). However, Henry Mintzberg who came up with his 10 managerial roles claimed that Fayols 5 functions were inadequate to describe what managers do (Mintzberg, 1973).
This essay analyses the case of Suzie who has an opportunity to apply some of her knowledge as a temporary manager in a grocery store. The author will use both Fayols functions and Mintzbergs roles that are still applicable today and are not antithetical to illustrate how these theories have helped understanding managers job of getting things done through people...
