The basic fact is that the average world temperature is increasing, but the argument is whether or not it is because of global warming. The main signs that global warming does exist are a series of hot summers in the 1930s and the environmental disaster of the dustbowl in the Midwest USA.
During 1940-1970 there was an overall fall in average temperature of about 0.2 degrees centigrade, this sparked talk of another ice age, and scientists suggested that the hot summers in the 1980s were just random fluctuations.
British research findings.
Researchers from the meteorological office and the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia found 1998 to be the warmest year on record since 1850 and the 1990s to be the warmest decade; this shows an obvious increase in temperatures.
However, although some areas were noticeably warmer in the 1990s, therefore supporting that global warming does exist; e.g. USA and Southern Canada, others such as Northeast Canada and Greenland, were cooler than the long term average, therefore supporting that global warming does not exist and temperature rises are just down to random fluctuations. As most people are confused as to whether it exists or not some people use the term "global climate change" rather than Global warming"...
