Skill, technique and ability are all involved in any sporting activity or game in one way or another. There are many definitions of skill, Oldfield defines skill as “the behaviour which tends to eliminate the discrepancy between intention and performance”. ... However most definitions of skill would agree that “skill consists of the ability to bring about some end result with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of energy or time and energy”. “Ability is a stable, enduring, mainly genetically determined characteristic which underlies skilled performance and is used in various skills”. Technique is simply the manner in which someone performs a skill. This is basically saying that skill must be learned and abilities are inherited. ... Some individuals have the ability to do well in a particular sport, others may have outstanding ability to do well in a number of sports or events, due to the range of inherited abilities (the things which come naturally to you).
