You learn that the oldest sister is called Olga she is twenty-eight and a schoolteacher, however she does not enjoy her job and complains. She is quite emotional as we see in her first scene
The middle sister Masha is around 24. As we later find out in the act she is unhappily married, Masha got married young (18) and now has a very dull relationship with her husband Kulygin. As this play is set in pre-revolution Russia she does not work and therefore appears to be quite bored. As a reader/audience member, we see that Masha is one of the bitterest, this could be because of her displeasing married life. I view her as quite an arrogant person, and she views herself above the rest of the town.
Irina is the youngest; just turned twenty, in act one we do not see much of her love life, only we get the hint that Tusenbach is in love with her (pg. 20). We do not find out in this act but, later find out that she does have a job. In act one we see her fighting for her own grown up identity as her older siblings still view her as the baby of the family, which she does not appreciate...
