Baz Luhrmann, said to be one of the greatest and one of the youngest directors of all time when he began releasing movies such as Strictly Ballroom (1992)(Appendix A), Romeo & Juliet (1996)(Appendix B) and most recently Moulin Rouge (2001)(Appendix C). Baz Luhrmann is said to be an auteur director which will be examined with reference to the above mentioned movies and will be referring to specific scenes. Baz Luhrmann's movies relate around important aspects of life to tell the story. Baz Luhrmann makes use many filmic techniques but stereotyping, caricature, juxtaposition, melodrama and black humour.
Baz Luhrmann is famous for beginning his movies with the red curtains opening, which implies that the beginning of a fairy-tale story and ends with the curtains closing which implies it's the end of the story/play. This is known as "Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy."(Appendix D) Baz Luhrmann is famous for his quick edits, for his frenetic pace and manic energy during the first twenty minutes of each of the films, he doesn't just edit fast, he speeds up the film, so that the actors move with a jerky irregularity. These actors seem to look like cartoon characters, which then again emphasizes the fairy-tale like story.
