The Complete Human Conscious
What makes us complete in the form of consciousness? Eudora Welty's piece "A Worn Path" shows the reader a compilation of sub-conscious factors to form the total human conscious. Phoenix Jackson is the combination of every subconscious action, whether it was her actions or her words. The subconscious was prevalent throughout the entire piece. Jackson represented the id, ego, and the super ego throughout the story with each taking distinct control over Phoenix throughout the story. Phoenix's id, ego and superego took control of Phoenix at different points throughout the story and the superego was the driving motivation in the story.
The superego represents Phoenix's drive. That was the reason behind her long trek to get medicine. The conscious of Phoenix, by making an arduous trip across land for her ailing grandson, proves the superego is the motivational force, as the primal id or the ego would never attempt to trek that far a distance in the inhospitable environment .The conscious moral of the superego is present in the journey that Phoenix had to navigate through snow covered hills and rugged terrain...
