One way in which a manager is given the ability to reach the corporate strategy goals set by the organisation is by using the HR system of Performance Management. This can be defined as enhancing employee actions in an attempt to achieve results that conform to the company's goals and visions. Upon studying Performance Management, it is possible to reach the conclusion that an effective manager will plan and implement an effective, efficient and comprehensive performance management system. To this end, successful management is tied to an individuals ability create a system in which team members have clear reasonable goals, a sense that they are related to company objectives, have sufficient resources and training, and receive timely useful feedback and constructive criticism.
When faced with the challenge of having to manage individual human performance, understanding the theory of what factors can affect an individual's performance is necessary. What are the main factors that lead to higher performance? The AMO equation helps to answer that question in that it believes that:
Performance = Ability x Motivation x Opportunity
In brief, P = AMO.
As you can see, there are three factors that affect performance and it can be identified that the main concern is not motivation per se, but how does motivation contribute to improved performance. For example, what good is it to have a highly motivated workforce that is not skilled or competent, or a motivated workforce that lacks the opportunity to demonstrate their competence, if they have it? On the other hand, what good is it to have a highly competent workforce that lacks motivation?..
