Federalists vs. Anti-Federalists
After hours of grueling debate, the Constitution was finally completed. However, even after all of the compromises made, everyone was still not satisfied. In order for the Constitution to become affective, it had to be ratified, or approved, by nine states. Those who supported and apposed the ratification divided into two groups: the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists, respectively. So began the battle for ratification.
The Anti-Federalists had several points to argue. In their view, the Constitution adequately outlined a government, but did little to guarantee personal liberty. The most powerful and persuasive argument against the proposed Constitution was the lack of a Bill of Rights, or any means to defend individual civil liberties. They feared any government that diminished the power of the states, as the new Constitution surely promised to do, would also diminish the ability of each state to meet the needs of its citizens...
