Zora Neale Hurston's main character in Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie Mae Crawford, had three capitol male influences in her life. These men's influence helped mold Janie's character.
When she was sixteen, Janie married her first husband, Logan Killicks. Janie's grandmother, Nanny, thought it best to marry Janie young, so that Janie didn't get into trouble, as her mother had. To Janie, marriage was supposed to be a walk in the park and she would live happily ever after. Janie did not have the loving relationship with Killicks that she wanted, so after a few years of loveless marriage, she ran off with another man, Joe Starks. Although her relationship with Killicks was hopeless, Janie learned valuable lessons from him, such as patience pays off, and love doesn't just "come".
Janie's second male influence, Joe Starks, was a wealthy black man. He had plans to marry a suitable woman, move to a small black town, and become mayor. Janie became that suitable woman...
