"There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe." The Gospel of John is like the writing of an old friend. The Gospel of John can draw you in and paint such pictures that can grab you and carry you to the world of the Evangelist. John gives us a more private and philosophical picture of Christ. We should notice the particularly profound use in chapter 4 and the passion account. This suggests the clear memories of an eyewitness. Nowhere in this gospel does John the disciple appear by name. He is named twenty times in the synoptics. This strongly suggests that either the author of this gospel had never heard of John the disciple, which seems extremely far-flung, or he was John the disciple...
