This book is about boy who was abandoned by his parents. This boy, Jim Burden, at the age of 10, had lost his parents because of their sudden deaths. Jim, then moved into Nebraska, where he had to live with his grandparents. At first, during Jim's stay, he was a very shy boy, up until he had to visit his new neighbors. His neighbor was the Shimerda family, who had just traveled from Bohemia to Black Hawk also. Right when Jim and Antonia meet, they quickly become friends and then not too soon after, Mr. Shimerda asked Jim to teach Antonia the English language. To Jim's pleasure, he enjoyed teaching her and also sharing the many memories that they have had together. As the next winter came, it came along with a big snowstorm, and during this storm, Mr. Shimerda decides to take his own life away...
