After white settlers claimed America as their own, they forced the Natives to live on low-class reservations. Their cultures lost, and their communities left behind in the ever-changing technology world of the present. Though recently there have been attempts to put these reservations online, and active in the world-wide-web. Regardless of these attempts, the Native American society's future looks fairly low-tech in comparison to ours. These efforts may seem small, but it may be the bridge that connects our society to the society of those pushed aside in the past.
In 1999, The Microsoft Corporation, a multi-billion dollar company, donated $75,000 to the Evergreen State College to fund a computer lab on the Skokomish Tribal Reservation (Washington State). The lab will include the opportunity for Students of the tribe to learn to communicate through E-Mail; Post information onto web based pages, and create scanned documents. The number of computers is not known, but if the goal is to provide many computers, they will most likely be older, slower models, and upgrades won't be frequent. The goal of this grant is to provide Tribal Children with new and improved education opportunities, and widen their range of job opportunities.
The Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Rocky Boy, and Fort Belknap Indian Reservations have another goal in mind...
