Ni kan was an ordinary child, who liked to lay around and watch television. Ni kan was fine with being an ordinary child, where as her mother had bigger hopes and dreams for Ni kan. Once Ni kan seen the disappointed look on her mother's face she vowed to herself that she would not become something that she wasn't. Tan's story of a mother wanting her daughter to be a child prodigy, is actually a tragic and sad piece of fiction.
