My desire to become a physician grew from experiences I had while volunteering in medical settings and also as a result of the exposure I had to neuroscience during class work at Miami University.
During my junior year of high school, I was selected for an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) program. This program teaches students how EMT's save lives and make a real contribution to their communities. Volunteers first attended several medical training sessions. After satisfactory completion of this training, we accompanied EMT's in the ambulance on calls. Our job was to supply the medical team with whatever backup and support they needed and to learn the regimen they follow.
This program had a profound effect on me and helped crystallize my decision to become a physician. I was truly impressed with their ability to operate on the front lines of medicine and their ability to help people while dealing with crisis, confusion, hysteria, pain and suffering. Watching an EMT provide primary emergency medical care convinced me I want to be someone people rely upon when they need help.
