What is the value of Information Management

CS5025A Information Management: Approaches, Skills & Techniques
1)     The value of information management
In this section I will attempt to explain what I see as the Value of Information Management (IM). I will do this by developing a definition of IM into a process model and use this along with my interpretation of “value” and examples to demonstrate where IM can add value to an organisation.
“Information management is the management of organisational processes and systems that acquire, create, organise, distribute, and use information”. (Wei Choo, 2003)
This definition leads towards a process view of information management. In this view, Information Management can be seen as a continuous cycle of five closely related activities:
•     Identification of information needs;
•     Acquisition and creation of information;
•     Classification, organisation and storage of information;
•     Information distribution and dissemination;
•     Information use.
(Wei Choo, 2003)
Graphically this can be represented with the following process model: (Figure 1)

The underlying idea behind Information Management (IM) is that just as a company would purposefully and systematically manage its human resources or financial assets in order to realise their full potential, it should do likewise for its information resources and processes.
The value of IM therefore lies in enabling an organisation to fully realise and capitalise on the potential of the information it owns. I have chosen to demonstrate the value of IM through observing the benefits that it can bring to an organisation when done well.
