In chapter 1 we are introduced to Cal the main character in the book. We also meet
Crilly his friend and Marcella the wife of the policeman whom Crilly shot and Cal drove
the getaway car.
Cal meets Marcella at the library and immediately falls in love with her. We find that
prejudice comes into the story very early in the book both with the murder of Marcella's
husband and when a threatening note is posted through Cal's letter box, telling him and
his father to leave the estate where they live but this practice continues even today to
many Catholics and Protestants.
We learn a lot about Cal in this Chapter, the fact he cannot keep a job, he is very shy and
more or less keeps himself to himself he finds it hard to mix with others or to keep
friends.
Cal joins the I.R.A. one of the main terrorist groups, which where growing rapidly, in
Northern Ireland at this time. Cal finds it extremely hard to leave the group after he finds
he cannot cope with the guilt, he has brought upon himself...
