Consider the view that the birth and infancy narratives reflect the authors understanding of the humanity

The theme of the question is human versus God, in other words, the humanity versus the Godlike qualities of Jesus. The birth and infancy narrative has many themes running throughout it, which are often repeated later on in the Gospel. Such as the strengths of women, and the importance of social outcasts for example shepherds. God chooses things that man would not. Also the fulfilment of prophecy plays a big part in the infancy narrative, an example is (Luke1: 20): And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." When the angel of the Lord tells Zechariah that Elizabeth will conceive and Zechariah disputes this. However after the naming of John, Luke tells us that (1:67): And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit"
The Birth and infancy narratives also provide us with a link between the old and New Testament with the linking of Joseph to Adam the first Son of God. Luke goes through Jesus' descendents because he was writing mainly for the Gentiles and they would not have known that if Luke left it going back to David that he was connected to God. One point to make clear is however that although the Gentile theme runs through Luke does not turn his back on Judaism. However by linking Jesus back to Adam this shows that Jesus is a descendent of David and as prophesised has come to save them...
