When one sees a work of art, one may see what the artist wished to portray, but often one is not able to recognize the beliefs and ideas that inspired such images. Events and movements of the time period can have monumental effects on art, and art can have monumental effects on the environment in which it is created The Catholic Counterreformation was an important movement that both influenced and was influenced by the art of the time period. The Baroque style of art had an immense effect on the Reformation, acting as a propaganda medium for the Catholic Counterreformation and a representation of the beliefs and values of the Catholic Church.
