The chapter that the ceremony is presented in is very unique as it is one of the only chapter in which Atwood does not refer to the 'time before'. The way that this structure is set, the reader has only the ceremony to concentrate on. This will give the full shock of the situation that Offred is in. The language used in the chapter is blunt and down to earth. Atwood leaves nothing to the reader's imagination because she wants to shock the reader into the truth of the situation, e.g. "the Commander is fucking."
The chapter starts with Offred saying that the ceremony goes as usual. This again gives the reader the knowledge that Offred has done this before. The way she describes the bedroom is also interesting, as she has her eyes shut...
