Originally ballads were found in medieval literature; however, ballads are still written today. Every ballad tells a story. Each of those stories is different, but nearly all of them are about tragedy, lost love, jealousy, revenge, sudden disaster, or adventure. Ballads have unique characteristics just as any other piece of literature. These characteristics include: repetition, refrain, dialogue, topics, hints, rhyme, and little background. More traditional ballads are commonly about lost love and contain at least three characteristics of a ballad. Ballads are emphatically another form of literature that influences the reader to a new level of thought or emotion. The ballad "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam is a great example of a modern song containing ballad characteristics.
