WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE BRITISH?
What does it mean to British? Firstly, one should think of Britain in its historical context; then Britain in the modern world and then one should reevaluate the question: What should it mean to be British?
There is little nationalism in modern British culture today. Patriotism is left to a small minority and one could argue that at best, it is little more than nostalgia. Britain has played an important part in the evolution of politics, philosophy and justices in the last thousand years. Or is this merely how we would like to think of ourselves? It was of coarse Britain who signed the treaty of Yalta that gave to the soviet empire most of eastern Europe. Stalin who at this time and for years to come would murder over twenty million of his own people. It was Britain who first invented, tested and used concentration camps in the Boer War...
