The Great Gatsby is a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald set in America after World War 1. This work is a secondary source because it is a fiction book. Nick Carraway, the narrator, describes society during the summer of 1922 in Long Island. He tells us a story about Jay Gatsby, his affluent and mysterious neighbor, who is trying to win the love of an upper-class married woman named Daisy. However, their romantic past is simply not enough to make their relationship work, for Daisy will never want to leave her husband. This piece of literature captures the differences between social classes and the spirits and dreams of Americans in the 1920's.
For the most part, The Great Gatsby was easy to interpret and understand. However, the author uses a perplexing symbol as a major part of the novel. In the beginning of the story, Nick sees Gatsby looking upon a green light, which happens to be on Daisy's dock...
