Okonkwo
The novel Things Fall Apart is the story of a strong man named Okonkwo whose
life is dominated by fear and anger. Set in the late nineteenth century, Okonkwo resolves to
erase the stigma left on him by his fathers laziness and unsuccessfulness. ... At a disadvantage, Okonkwo had not inherited a
barn from his father like other young men and had to start with nothing. Through ambition and
hardwork Okonkwo transcends his shameful heritage. Being the Ibo village leader, father,
and husband are three important roles Okonkwo has in this powerful narrative written by
Chinua Achebe.
To begin with, Okonkwo is greatly respected and feared as the Ibo village leader.
Okonkwo has very strong economic and political ties to the village and is treated with
admiration and respect by the villagers. ... At age 18 Okonkwo defeated Amalinze
the Cat, who was the great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten,"It was this man that
Okonkwo threw in a fight which the old men agreed was one of the fiercest since the founder
of their town engaged a spirit of the wild for seven days and seven nights." At a very young
age Okonkwo was already one of the greatest men of his time. ... For instance, when Ikemefuna runs toward Okonkwo when is
about to be killed, Okonkwo makes sure he looks strong and shows no emotion towards the
