Many times in history, key technological advancements can also be turned into key military weapons. The Manhattan Project is a prime example of this. The Manhattan Project was the code name for the US effort during World War II to produce an atomic bomb and weapons superiority. It was named after the Manhattan Engineer District of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Much of the early research was done at their facility in New York City.
The pivotal point of the atomic bomb arms race was on August 2, 1939, when Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard wrote a letter to President Roosevelt concerning the use of uranium as a new source of energy and that extremely powerful bombs could also be created from atomic reactions. That led to the Committee on Uranium. The next year on October 9th FDR gave the go-ahead to begin developing the atom bomb.
