My name’s Michael Quinion. Virtually all of the 1400 pages that make up this site have been written by me over the past seven years, with several more being added every week. When people ask why I do it, they usually get the flip answer that writing World Wide Words is part hobby, part obsession—if you want to know more about where I’m coming from, see my personal page. My day job, insofar as I can be said to have one, is as a researcher and writer on the English language. My most recent book has been published by Oxford University Press. It’s about those vital building blocks of the language, prefixes and suffixes. A very pleasant review of it appeared a little time ago in the Library Journal, describing it as being for “anyone who truly loves language”. ABOUT THIS SITE All the pieces here are about English words and phrases—what they mean, where they came from, how they have evolved, and the ways in which people sometimes misuse them. They appeared first in the free newsletter that I send out by e-mail every Saturday to 17,000+ subscribers worldwide.
