Cellular Respiration
Catabolic (break down) reactions which produce CO2 + H2O from chemical compounds in food to release ATP energy
ATP is chemical energy molecule for all biosynthesis reaction of metabolism. Ex. Cell growth, maintenance, transportation.
The 3 stages of cellular respiration.
1.) Glycolysis V (occurs in cytosol) 6-C of glucose brake down into 2-3C molecules of pyruvate, 2 ATP (net) and 2 NADPH. If there is no O2 is present, (i.e. after exercise) than animals carry out lactic acid fermentation.
Glucose " pyruvate " lactic acid " 2 ATP
Yeasts and bacteria, alcohol fermentation
Glucose " pyruvate " ethyl alcohol + 2 ATP, CO2
Both types of fermentation are anaerobic (CO2 debt) and cuts short the respiration process yielding a small amount of ATP...
